BayQuest is seeking funding to acquire and equip a Safe Boat Defender-Class 25’ or similar high-speed, maneuverable patrol vessel for its on-going bay and near coastal monitoring. It would serve as the main platform for conducting our on-the-water work.

Defender Safe Boats and similar rapid-response vessels are used in law enforcement, harbor patrols and the United States Coast Guard due to their stability, sturdy design, high speed capability and maneuverability. They offer the design and functional capacity to safely accommodate researchers/observers, crew and equipment while navigating the choppy waters of San Francisco Bay and the Northern California coast.

Phase I of this funding includes vessel acquisition and installation of vital safety, navigation and communications systems. This may include current and modern chartplotter, radar, AIS Transporter/Receiver, Depth Sounder, EPIRB, LifeRaft, LifeSaving /Emergency gear, VHF Radios and crew communication devices. It would include systems for data gathering and internet connectivity.

Specialized equipment will be considered and installed in collaboration with partner organizations such as overhead winch or davit systems, electronics and related gear for taking/testing samples.
